(Bear Family) 2016
One of Elvis’ chief inspirations, blues legend Arthur Crudup was overdue for a complete overview of his classic Bluebird and RCA Victor sides (not to mention the varied sides Big Boy made for other labels after he left RCA), and Bear Family was more than up to the task with this five-CD box. Since there weren’t any of Arthur’s close contemporaries left to interview, my extensive liner notes essay dealt more with the guitarist’s intriguing history and innovations.
